Believed to be born around 1431, historians believe Vlad’s birthplace to be the Transylvanian town of Sighisoara. He was the second born son of Vlad Dracul, who was the Ruler of Wallachia at the time. His mother, on the other hand, is something of a mystery, but is believed to be a noblewomen from Maldovia. At the age of 11 he, his father, and his brother were captured by the Ottomans and imprisoned for a year. At the end of the year their father was released, but Vlad and his brother Radu were kept as prisoners to ensure that their father would continue to rule as a “puppet ruler.” Vlad’s time with the Turks was not wasted, though, as he spent his time as their captive learning and became well educated in logic, literature, science, geography and the Persian language. It is also believed that it was during his time as a prisoner that he first witnessed impalement as a torture technique, a technique he is still today known for…but…we’ll get to that in a minute. Number 9: The Order of the Dragon. Despite sounding like the name of the next superhero movie, the order of the dragon was a group devoted to fighting the enemies of Christianity; in particular the Ottoman Empire and pagans of the time. Vlad and his father were both part of the order and Vlad II was so proud to be a member that he even changed his name to Dracul, which means dragon in Romanian, while Vlad III, in turn, changed his name to Dracula…which at the time meant Son of the Dragon. Although, modern translations change the translation closer to Son of the Devil. Surprisingly, being part of The Order of the Dragon meant that Vlad was a devout Christian and fought to preserve Christianity in what was then known as Wallachia…although Vlad’s version of preserving Christianity still included his tried and tested method of impaling people. Number 8: Impalement. As we’ve noted here, as well as in an earlier Zero2Hero video on the Worst Kings and Queens in history, Vlad Tepes loved impailing people. Whatever your crime under Vlad’s rule, no matter how small, impalement was the only punishment. Sure, he had other torture techniques that he would use on his enemies, but for anybody who committed a crime under his rule, whether it be petty theft for food or murder, they had to face impalement. This may sound ruthless, and perhaps it was, but under Vlad’s rule the crime rate was extremely low, with most fearing that they would be found out and punished. The trouble is that Vlad didn’t impale his victims with the purpose of killing them right away, but would actually ensure that victims survived on the spear so that they would suffer for days before eventually succumbing to their wounds or loss of blood. Vlad even had a test he would use in order to see how loyal his subjects were. Number 7: The Golden Cup. Simply put, Vlad had his citizens under his thumb and he knew it, and in order to prove this he devised a clever plan. The impaler would place a solid gold cup in the town square of Tirgoviste stating that anybody could drink from the cup if they needed, but the cup was not allowed to leave the town square. To truly realize what he did, you need to know that the city had around 60,000 people living in it at the time and among them there were thousands of people living in poverty, people who could have not only drank from the cup, but taken it and sold it for a significant amount of money. Despite this, though, the cup was left completely untouched for what some people believe was years. The point proven here was that even though Vlad had given his people permission to drink from the cup, they were too afraid of the possible consequences of doing this, fearing that it was a trap and that if you actually drank from the cup you would be impaled. What do you think would have happened to anybody who used the cup? Let us know in the comments below. While you’re there…don’t forget to click on the subscribe button to follow us for future videos!
